I am a member of the McCarthy group focused on the genetics of type 2 diabetes and related traits including obesity and glycaemia. My current research is focused on using large-scale genetic data (eg. genome-wide association data, exome-chip data) to identify and characterise genetic variants influencing predisposition to type 2 diabetes and related traits. I’m particularly interested in transethnic studies in type 2 diabetes using a combination of next-generation sequencing and GWAS approaches based on the T2D-GENES consortium. The genetic association studies are based at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics.
In collaboration with The China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) research group at CTSU, I planned to evaluate the associations of GWAS identified variants with type 2 diabetes and related traits in the Chinese population as well as their effects on CVD risks.
I got my Ph.D degree in the Institute for Nutritional Sciences, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, under supervision of Prof. Xu Lin. We conducted a genome-wide association study of type 2 diabetes in Chinese subjects comprising ~43,000 cases and controls in total. We identified two novel T2D loci: GRK5-rs10886471 and RASGRP1-rs7403531, of which the association signal at GRK5 seems to be specific to East Asians. The T2D-risk increasing allele of RASGRP1-rs7403531 was also associated with higher HbA1c and lower HOMA-B, while the T2D-risk increasing allele of GRK5-rs10886471 was also associated with higher fasting insulin but not with fasting glucose.
