Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine
I graduated from the University of Oxford Medical School in 1998, and have subsequently pursued a career in Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine. I have recently taken up the post of Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Oxford, following an initial period of research studying human genetic susceptibility to invasive bacterial infection. During this period I identified an association between the major autoimmune susceptibility locus PTPN22 and susceptibility to invasive pneumococcal disease and thoracic empyema (Chapman SJ et al., Nature Genetics 2006; 38(5): 499-500). This was both the first genetic polymorphism to be identified in association with empyema, and the first infectious disease to be associated with PTPN22. Associations were also identified between polymorphisms in genes that encode inhibitors of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-kB and susceptibility to invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumococcal empyema (Chapman SJ et al., American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine 2007; 176: 181-187). I developed a particular interest in the genetic control of the Toll-like receptor inflammatory signalling pathway, and together with a colleague Dr Khor described an association between a genetic polymorphism in the Toll adaptor protein Mal/TIRAP and protection from invasive pneumococcal disease, bacteraemia, malaria and tuberculosis (Khor CC/Chapman SJ et al., Nature Genetics 2007; 39(4): 523-528).
My clinical interests are in respiratory infection and pleural disease, and I co-authored the Oxford Handbook of Respiratory Medicine (Oxford University Press; First Edition, 2005; Reprinted, 2006; Greek, Spanish and Turkish translations, 2006; Second Edition, in progress) and have published eleven book chapters and review articles on clinical aspects of respiratory disease. My long-term goal is to pursue a career in academic respiratory medicine with the aim of translating an increased understanding of the genetic control of innate immune signalling into novel therapeutic strategies for respiratory infection.
