Gabriel Valbuena

Dr. Gabriel Valbuena is a Postdoctoral Bioinformatician in the Leedham Lab at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics. His current work focuses on bioinformatic approaches for functional genomics in the development of colorectal cancer, looking at multi-omics approaches to characterise the dysregulation of homeostasis in intestinal inflammation, pre-neoplastic gastrointestinal disease, and in cancer.

Gabriel holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Imperial College London, where his doctoral research investigated metabolic profiles of cellular and animal models, and human CNS tissue in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis using 1H NMR and GC-MS metabolomics.

His previous postdoctoral work at Imperial College London on a Cancer Research UK-funded project for the Early Detection Consortium focused on the analysis of data from a diverse range of biomolecule measurements (proteomics, lipidomics, autoantibodies, and microRNA-sequencing) from longitudinally-sampled human serum to identify candidate biomarkers, and applied machine learning approaches to develop and optimise diagnostic panels for the early detection of colorectal cancer to be taken forward for commercial diagnostic test development.
