Events and Seminars

The Bioinformatics Core within the WTCHG organises and runs several seminar series and interest groups. The details some of these are listed below. These seminars are open to all members of the WTCHG. Visitors from outside the centre are welcome, although should notify myself or another member of the core before their visit so that access to the building can be arranged.

Seminars

Bioinformatics Workshops
Several half-day bioinformatics workshops have been co-hosted with Professor Jotun Hein and the Department of Statistics, University of Oxford. For further details are available here. Previous topics have included Regulatory Elements in Eukaryote Genomes, Genetics of Disease and Alternate Splicing.

Book Discussion Group
We are currently working through "Algorithms on Strings, Trees, and Sequences: Computer Science and Computational Biology. Dan Gusfield". Our main interest in the book is the discussion of suffix trees and their application to complex string matching problems such as the discovery of regulatory element binding sites and the general handling of tiling array and resequencing datasets. The discussions are held weekly and past material is available here.

BIOSTAG
The Bioinformatics and Statistical Genetics (BioStag) seminar series is forum for speakers internal and external to the WTCHG to present research work from a wide range of computational biology research fields. The series is held every 2 weeks on Wednesday afternoon, 4 - 5 p.m. in seminar rooms A/B. Full schedule details can be found here.

Introduction to Expression Profiling
This three part lecture series was run in the summer of 2006 and was designed to provide an overview of the main platforms currently used in expression profiling. Also covered were experimental design issues and common algorithms used in the normalisation, analysis and annotation of expression profiling data. Full schedule details and presentations can be found here.

Expression Profiling User Group
This user group discusses technical issues pertaining to the expression profiling methodology and the analysis, storage and annotation of expression profiling data. A moderated mailnig list exists. A seminar series to discuss specific topics will commence in Autumn 2006.
