Genetics of Complex Traits in Model OrganismsGauguier group Biological Atlas of Insulin ResistanceBAIRThis new research programme funded by the Wellcome Trust under its functional genomics and development initiative aims at applying novel functional genomics strategies to address major and unresolved questions concerning the molecular basis of insulin action and insulin resistance. Diseases associated with insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, obesity and coronary heart disease) represent dominant courses of premature death and disability in the developed and underdeveloped world. Due to the obvious complexity of human insulin resistance, rodent models represent essential tools for the accurate and comprehensive characterisation of molecular mechanisms underlying normal insulin action and the progressive development of insulin resistance. The programme will be implemented by a consortium of laboratories at Imperial College London, Queen Mary and Westfield College London, Cambridge University and Oxford University. It will involve the analysis of in vivo and in vitro insulin signalling, rodent gene-targeting, human genetics, emergent genomic technologies (transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabonomics), bioinformatics and structural biology.
