Research summary

I obtained a BSc (Pharmacy) and MSc (Pharmacology) in China. In 2002, I came to Oxford as a research assistant, and worked in the Department of Clinical Neurology and the Department of Anatomy before conducting my Dphil studies in the Pharmacology Department. Following the completion of my Dphil, I joined Watkins’ group in 2008. The focus of my current research is to investigate the mechanism of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) caused by sarcomeric mutations.

HCM is the most common cause of sudden death in young adults. While mutations in the sarcameric protein genes have been linked to HCM, the pathogenesis of sarcomeric mutations causing HCM remains unclear, and there is no curative therapy for HCM at present. We have proposed that sarcomeric mutations in HCM lead to increased energy demand and ultimately cause energy deficiency which contributes to the pathogenesis of HCM. We will test this hypothesis in a model with inducible expression of HCM-mutant troponin T. It is hoped that the results of this study will lead to novel strategies for therapies in HCM.
