Roberto Amato is a research associate in statistical genomics. He joined the group in July 2012 and is currently involved in the analysis of Plasmodium falciparum genetic diversity.

The main focus of his research is to develop novel statistical methods to understand the evolution of the parasite at a population level with the aim to shed light on the mechanism underlying the emergence of drug resistance.

He got a PhD in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics from the University of Naples "Federico II", specializing in Population Genetics. During his doctoral studies he was a visiting student at the University of Chicago. He also holds a BSc and an MSc in Computer Science. Before joining the group he worked at the Telethon Institute for Genetics and Medicine.
