Rat Radiation Hybrid Maps (1999)

A whole-genome radiation hybrid panel (T55) was used to construct a high-resolution map of the rat genome based on 5255 markers. These include about 3000 new CA-repeat microsatellite markers (Got) and markers with known genetic locations (Wox, Mit, Mgh, Rat ...) allowing comparison and integration of maps from different sources. The mapping of more than 500 genes, which have been localised in mouse and/or human, illustrates the power of a RH approach for comparative mapping. A robust framework map containing 1030 positions ordered with odds of at least 1000:1 has been defined as a tool for mapping these markers and for future RH mapping in the rat.

  • Radiation Hybrid panel T55

  • The construction and the characterization of the rat RH panel were supported by EC Biotechnology Grant (BIO4-CT96-0372).
The rat whole-genome radiation hybrid panel T55 was derived by Linda McCarthy in Peter Goodfellow's laboratory at Cambridge University, U.K.
The full panel consists of 106 Radiation Hybrid clones produced after irradiation with 3000 rad of x-rays. DNA for these are available to the scientific community (Research Genetics Inc.). An optimal subset of 96 hybrids has been identified and is proposed for future mapping. It consists of hybrids 2-10, 12-14, 16-19, 21-34, 36, 37, 39-50, 52, 53, 55-59, 61-89, 91-106.

  • RH Maps

  • Maps were constructed using the MultiMap implementation of RADMAP (T.C. Matise, C.Kashuk, A. Chakravarti, unpublished; MultiMap).

  • Framework: The framework raw data are provided in a mapping-ready format for investigators who wish to localise markers for their own use. Alternatively, investigators could use the RH mapping server available on the Otsuka GEN Research Institute web site.
