Research Summary

A great deal is already known about the causes of coronary heart disease (CHD), but the differences in disease susceptibility between individuals cannot be explained entirely by known risk factors (such as smoking, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia). Predisposition to CHD involves the complex interaction between a number of genetic and environmental factors, each of which exerts only a modest effect. Age at which CHD presents seems to depend strongly on genetic factors. The PROCARDIS study aims at identifying previously susceptibility genes by studying individuals who have developed CHD at a relatively young age. It is anticipated that this will lead to improved understanding of the pathogenesis of CHD, which, in turn, will aid development of new approaches to diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
