George joined the group in 2013 as a research associate in statistical genomics. He works on the MalariaGEN datasets with a specific focus on population genetics. The large numbers of individuals from diverse African populations typed for the project provide a particularly rich resource for understanding the effects of population structure on susceptibility to malaria. This data will provide a unique opportunity to understand the effects of natural selection on the human genome, as well as a window in the evolutionary history of African populations.
George completed his DPhil in human evolutionary genetics in the Department of Zoology at Oxford in 2012, focusing on the reconstruction of population genetic history in Europe and admixture in worldwide populations. He's looking forward to harnessing the power of big data in a biomedical context.
