I'm interested in utilizing multivariate statistics for data analysis in genetics and genomics. With recent advances in the efficiency of array-based high-throughput SNP genotyping technology, hundreds of thousands of SNPs are now routinely genotyped on sample sizes necessary to detect the modest genetic effects we expect for complex diseases. New high throughput large-scale methods are also routinely used to obtain a functional snapshot of the biological state by measuring for example gene expression levels and metabolite profiles. Analyzing this data is difficult due to its shear size and complex data structures with high noise content, correlated variables and with the number of variables far exceeding the number of individuals.
My research is focused on developing interactive user-friendly tools for analysing genetic and related data and to develop and utilise methods for functional evaluation of results. GoldSurfer2 is a freely available GUI based software developed in collaboration with GSK that can be used in all steps of genomewide association studies from importing data to evaluation of results. I'm also interested in utilizing multivariate statistics to analyse data in computational molecular biology. Examples include various studies such as identifying binding motifs from CHIP-chip data and strategies for identifying differentially expressed transcripts from microarray data. Specific examples in genetics include dealing with stratification effects, evaluation of genotype imputation, latent structure based genetic interaction testing and eQTL analysis.
