For Non-Scientists

Diseases such as heart attack can occasionally run in families and doctors think that this may be due to the inheritance of some genes.

We are trying to identify some of these genes in order to:

1) understand the causes of heart disease so new preventative measures and treatments can be developed, and

2) estimate risk based on genetic profiles. To carry out this research, we need to collect DNA samples from thousands of patients and compare them with healthy volunteers.

Several genes, that each make a tiny change to the overall risk of suffering a heart attack have been identified and we are following this research up to see if new treatments might be possible in the future.
