Ethics of Equality & Cost-Effectiveness – Implications for Personalised Medicine
Limited resources mean that it is not possible for each person to receive all the healthcare from which they would benefit. A cost-effectiveness, or utilitarian based approach aims to maximise the healthcare benefits available to each person. Personalised medicine brings out this conflict in new ways by making us think about how to optimise healthcare for an individual, but this must be balanced against the needs of all the individuals who make up the population.
