Research overview

After graduating from UCL with a BSc in Zoology, I joined Professor McCarthy’s group based at the Wellcome Trust for Human Genetics to carry out a genome wide scan for Type 2 diabetes (T2D) using microsatellite markers.  The study involved genotyping members from T2D families and control samples.  My PhD project, supervised by Professor McCarthy and Professor Marjo-Riitta Jarvelin (Imperial College) investigated the genetic aetiology of early growth and subsequent adult metabolic disease using the Northern Finland Birth Cohort of 1966 (NFBC1966).

After completing my PhD I moved from Imperial College to the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM), where I was involved in replication efforts for T2D association signals identified in the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC) GWAS.  In recent years I have been involved with a variety of projects coming through the McCarthy/Gloyn laboratories. My research interests include investigating the role of genetic variants and their influence on risk of metabolic traits, as well as characterising the functional consequences.
